Salesforce announced plans to acquire Rune Technologies, a startup developing AI software that helps the US Army and Marine Corps plan supplies near the front line. The company stated this marks its most significant acquisition in the national security space.
Rune will become part of Missionforce, Salesforce's defence division launched one year ago. The deal value is reported as $375 million in cash and shares, though Salesforce did not officially disclose the figure. This amount was cited by Margaux MacColl of Resilience Media based on two sources familiar with the matter.
Founded in 2024 by David Tuttle and Peter Goldsborough, both former leaders at Anduril, Rune developed TyrOS. This software forecasts what frontline units require and suggests resource distribution and transport routing. It operates with little or no network connection, syncing data when connectivity returns. The US Army and Marine Corps already utilize the system.
In June, the Pentagon awarded Rune a $99 million contract for TyrOS after receiving only one bid. Rune has raised $30 million from investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Point72 Ventures, and IQT. One source placed Rune's last valuation at $134 million.
Salesforce described its defence business as growing 80% annually, serving customers across all six branches of the US military. The company also referenced a 10-year Army contract with a $5.6 billion ceiling. Missionforce serves as the system of record at headquarters, while Rune adds the frontline layer.
The acquisition is expected to close in the fourth quarter of Salesforce's 2027 fiscal year. This follows Salesforce's October agreement to purchase marketing platform Braze for approximately $5.7 billion and the September completion of its Fin acquisition.
