Amazon has introduced significant upgrades to its Echo smart speaker lineup during a recent launch event. The updates focus on adding hardware capabilities that expand the devices' utility beyond simple voice interaction.
The Echo Studio with Home Camera is priced at $249.99 and features a built-in camera designed for live in-home monitoring. Amazon states this allows users to keep tabs on family members and pets through a live view. The device uses adaptive vision technology to recognize objects, such as board game boxes or cereal packaging, to assist with tasks like explaining rules or reordering items. An optional stand for the camera unit is available separately for $39.99. A version of the Echo Studio without the camera remains available.
Audio performance on the new Studio includes high-excursion woofers, three full-range drivers, and Dolby Atmos support. New software features include Advanced Room Adaptation, which adjusts sound based on the room's acoustics, and Adaptive Volume, which changes output levels depending on the listener's distance from the device.
The smaller Echo Dot has received updates to its internal connectivity. It now includes a built-in smart home hub, allowing it to connect and control compatible devices like thermostats, lights, and locks without requiring a separate hub. The latest iteration also integrates an Eero Wi-Fi extender capable of extending internet coverage by up to 1,000 square feet to an existing Eero network.
Processing power for the Echo Dot has been upgraded with Amazon's custom AZ3 silicon, enabling faster on-device processing for conversations with Alexa Plus. The device comes with four microphones to improve voice recognition. The standard Echo Dot is available in Graphite, Glacier White, Agave Green, and Coral Pink for $99.99. A specialized Echo Dot Kids edition is available in Octopus and Penguin designs starting at $109.99.
